Description Product information

On a plane trip, the 50-year-old engineer Walter Faber (Sam Shepard), a radical rationalist, accidentally meets Herbert (Dieter Kirchlechner), the brother of his student friend Joachim Hencke. After an emergency landing in the desert, Faber decides without further ado to accompany Herbert to the jungle of Guatemala, where Joachim owns a tobacco plantation. When they arrive there, they find that he has taken his own life. Back in New York, Faber separates from his lover Ivy and travels by ship to Europe. On board, he meets young Sabeth (Julie Delpy) and falls in love with her. Sabeth wants to visit her mother in Athens, who, as it turns out, is Faber's former girlfriend Hanna (Barbara Sukowa), whom he almost married. An unexpected incident finally abruptly ruins all plans and plunges Faber, whose entire worldview was based on the belief in the predictability of life, into a deep crisis. Volker Schlöndorff's visually stunning film adaptation of Max Frisch's world-famous novel has an outstanding cast with Sam Shepard ("The Stuff of Heroes"), Julie Delpy ("The Three Musketeers") and Barbara Sukowa ("Rosa Luxemburg") and was awarded the Filmband in Silver as Best Feature Film in 1991. From the German Film and Media Rating in Wiesbaden, HOMO FABER received the rating "particularly valuable".
